Second Annual Spring Symposium

April 30, 2013

Materials from Second Annual Spring Symposium:

Summary: Global Investing Panel
Summary: Single Family Housing Panel

Jerry L. Cohen
(BS ’53, MBA ’59), NYU Stern Board of Overseer, Partner of Tishman Speyer Properties, and the Center for Real Estate Finance Research invite you to a full-day exploration of four current hot topics in real estate finance.
  1. Real Estate as Critical Infrastructure: Resiliency and Sustainability

In recent years, man-made and natural disasters have had critical impacts on the built environment. This session reviews recent incidents and the lessons learned. What are the best practices in risk management for real estate companies in the new millennium?

  2. Global Investing: The Difference of a Decade

The past decade has seen a rise in the amount of global investment by US real estate companies. Other countries are also increasing their cross border investments. What are the forces driving this globalization of the real estate market?

  3. Single Family Housing: Opportunistic Investment or New Asset Class

The housing price bubble of 2008 created a unique opportunity for investors to aggregate single family houses in portfolios at well below replacement cost. Large amount of private and public capital have gone into this trade over the past three years. Is this a one-time price arbitrage or the birth of a new asset class?

  4. The Impact of the Internet on Commercial Real Estate

The internet has fundamentally changed our living habits including the way we work and shop. What are the long term implications of these changes for the way in which we use office and retail space? What are the financial implications of these changes for property investors?
