Michael Waugh is a Professor of Economics at New York University. He teaches macroeconomics, international economics, and data science for economists.

Professor Waugh's research focuses on international trade, growth and development, and their intersection. He has published in leading academic journals including the American Economic Review and the Quarterly Journal of Economics. In 2015 he was the winner of the Bhagwati Award which was awarded by the Journal of International Economics Editorial Board for the best article published in the JIE during 2013 and 2014.

He is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, a member of the Advisory Board of Carnegie-Rochester-NYU Conference on Public Policy, and an associate editor for the Journal of Development Economics. He has been a visiting scholar at the Becker Friedman Institute (University of Chicago) and the Federal Reserve Banks of Philadelphia, St. Louis, and Minneapolis.

Prior to joining Stern in 2009, Professor Waugh was a research economist with the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. He received his B.A. in Economics from Saint Anselm College, his M.A. in Economics from Fordham University and his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Iowa.
