Transfer Applicants
Please note that the information below is reprinted directly from the Admissions Office's website. Questions about these requirements should be directed to NYU Undergraduate Admissions.
The Stern School of Business considers transfer students for the fall semester only. As a result, competition is significant and the transfer admission process is highly selective. Students who are most competitive typically present extraordinary records of achievement on both the undergraduate and secondary school levels.
To be considered for transfer admission to the Stern School of Business, you must have completed (or be in the process of completing) one year and 30–32 semester hours at your current college or university. This does not include credit awarded by examination or earned at a previous school. If you do not meet this requirement you will not be considered for admission. Please note that all degree candidates in Stern must complete at least 64 consecutive points of course work in residence at Stern immediately preceding the date of graduation. Also note that the Leonard N. Stern School of Business will not consider for transfer admission students who enter NYU by transferring into another NYU school or college.
Required Coursework:
Students wishing to transfer into the second/sophomore year should have completed the following 3 courses (at a minimum)† at their current institution:
- 1 semester of Calculus*
- 1 semester of introductory Microeconomics* (intermediate-level is preferred, if possible)
- 1 semester of writing/composition*
In addition to the required coursework listed above, potential sophomore-year transfers could have more course flexibility at NYU Stern if they have also completed courses similar to what Stern students take in their first year, including the following: a science course (or have an AP score of 4 or 5 in a science), a second semester of writing, a Statistics course, and a Financial Accounting course.
Students wishing to transfer into the third/junior year should have completed the requirements listed above for sophomores as well as the following courses (at a minimum)† at their current institution:
- 1 semester of writing/English*
- 1 semester of Statistics* (preferably with a Calculus prerequisite)
- 1 semester of Financial Accounting
- 1 semester of Management, Marketing, or other introductory business-related course
Potential junior-year transfers could have more flexibility in their NYU Stern career if they have also completed courses similar to what Stern students take in their first two years, including the following: two total semesters of writing, a science course (or have an AP score of 4 or 5 in a science), an introductory philosophy or “great books” course, a course focusing on a specific culture, and introductory business courses.
Potential Transfer Students Interested in Stern’s BS-MS in Accounting Program
Students interested in the BS-MS program, especially if applying into the junior year, must have completed both Financial Accounting and Managerial Accounting before transfer. Note that there is a separate application required for the BS-MS program after admission and the student’s arrival on campus for the fall semester.
Please note that completion of these prerequisite courses at your current institution does NOT guarantee transfer of credit. Official approval of transfer credit takes place after your admission and evaluation of your previous coursework by the Undergraduate College. Also, certain business courses (i.e., Statistics, Marketing, and Finance) will require passing a Stern proficiency exam after admission. For your own information, you may view our Stern course syllabi.
* The calculus course must be the equivalent of Calculus I as offered by your school’s mathematics department; courses such as business calculus, elementary calculus, and calculus for social sciences typically do not satisfy the calculus requirement for Stern transfers. Also compare to NYU’s V63.0121 course. Note that college credit that may have been awarded to you for AP Calculus from your current institution does not satisfy the Stern mathematics requirement. In addition, Stern will not transfer any AP credit you may have previously been awarded by your current school in Calculus AB or BC, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Statistics, or English.
† Note: We understand that some students may not be able to complete all of the recommended courses by the time of application. In that case, we ask that you provide an explanation in the “additional information” section of your application for the Committee on Admissions to consider when your application is reviewed.
