Professor and Dean Emeritus Peter Blair Henry joined a virtual roundtable hosted by the United Nations entitled “Rebirthing the Global Economy to Deliver Sustainable Development” on November 24, 2020. UN Secretary-General António Guterres delivered opening remarks followed by Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank.

The discussion convened some of the most influential thinkers, policy makers and practitioners in the field to provide recommendations for building a new global economic system founded on social and economic inclusion, equity and environmental justice to help restart the world economy and deliver sustainable development for all. The conversation also touched on actions that can be taken to rebuild from the COVID-19 pandemic, how systemic inequalities in the global economy can be eradicated and a new economic system can be created that prioritizes equity, inclusion and sustainability, and what role a multilateral system can play in the process.

“We need to define reality and give hope,” said Professor Henry during the discussion. “Infrastructure investment in the developing world is the single biggest opportunity to simultaneously achieve net-zero emissions, increase global growth, particularly in developing countries, and reduce inequality.”

Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohamed provided closing remarks.
