Preliminary Results of a New NYU Study Show Education Primes the Pipeline of Entrepreneurs

NEW YORK--Two teams of researchers will report on the first phase of their study on effective approaches to the training of prospective innovative entrepreneurs. One of these teams – under the direction of Professors Batia Wiesenfeld and Jeffrey Simonoff of NYU Stern, and Professor Matt Mayhew and Post-doctoral fellow Laurie Behringer of NYU Steinhardt, with the participation of Professor William Baumol, academic director of NYU Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, and funded through a challenge grant from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation – has set out to provide a foundation for the redesign of entrepreneurship educational programs and to support the effectiveness of public policies designed to promote economic growth. The other team, led by Dr. Albert Lee and financed by the Small Business Administration, focuses on ways in which small business firms can make the most effective use of entrepreneurial talent.

Having reached the first milestone in their research, the investigators have issued the results of their recent study, which polled more than 5,500 students and alumni from five US universities. A selection of their findings shows that:

  • Students who take entrepreneurial courses are more likely to launch, run or be employed by a start-up company
  • Students who take entrepreneurial courses are more innovative (as measured by the number of patents, new production processes, and new services or products)
  • Faculty can pursue activities that may ultimately foster innovative entrepreneurial activity in students following graduation

“The preparation of a strong cadre of capable, innovative entrepreneurs is critical to the repair and future prosperity of our economy,” explains Professor William Baumol. “And these findings will undoubtedly contribute to the effectiveness of education of innovative entrepreneurs in the future.”

Preliminary results of the research studies will be presented at NYU Stern on Wednesday, September 23, 2009, from 11:00am-3:00pm. To RSVP to this event, please contact Carolyn Ritter in NYU Stern’s Office of Public Affairs, 212-998-0624, critter@stern.nyu.edu.
