NYU Stern Nobel Laureate Robert Engle Forecasts High Market Volatility for Next 12 Months

--Available for Interviews--

NEW YORK--On Friday April 3, 2009, Professor Engle will debut Stern’s new Volatility Lab, or “Vlab” for short, at the Volatility Institute’s inaugural conference.

A new and independent tool to measure market risk, the Vlab calculates the volatility of the S&P 500, MSCI World Index, emerging markets, commodities, exchange rates and more every day. It also produces volatility forecasts up to a year in advance.

At the close of 1st quarter, Professor Engle cites several trends:

  • Market volatility is forecasted to remain high for the next year
  • S&P500 volatility increased to 37% from last year’s 26%
  • International and emerging market volatility is well above average
  • Sweden’s volatility sustained its six-month high, closing at 70%, well above the international market index average of 14%
  • The financial crisis pushed Italy’s volatility to 63%, the highest in the Eurozone
  • Volatility of gold declined to 18%, below its 23% average
