NYU Stern Salomon Center, in partnership with Nasdaq OMX, recently hosted an all-day conference discussing the future of derivatives. New research in the area was presented by Stern faculty and faculty from other schools including Columbia Business School and UCLA.

These Stern faculty, along with many of their colleagues, developed 18 independent policy papers offering market-focused solutions to the financial crisis, which were published in the book "Restoring Financial Stability: How to Repair a Failed System."

With ailing U.S. automakers receiving government bailouts, the CEO Series on April 7 with Stefan Jacoby, President and Chief Executive Officer of Volkswagen of America, Inc., proved to be especially timely and of interest to the hundreds of NYU Stern students and alumni who attended to hear Jacoby speak.

On Friday April 3, 2009, Professor Engle will debut Stern’s new Volatility Lab, or “Vlab” for short, at the Volatility Institute’s inaugural conference. A new and independent tool to measure market risk, the Vlab calculates the volatility of the S&P 500, MSCI World Index, emerging markets, commodities, exchange rates and more every day. It also produces volatility forecasts up to a year in advance.

“When the economy sours and corporate bottom lines suffer, organizations must rely on employees more than ever to go beyond the call of duty,” says NYU Stern Professor Steve Blader. In two recent studies examining close to 1,000 employees, he and his colleagues explored how organizations can motivate workers.

NYU Stern hosted an event for alumni and the media to discuss the ideas in the book, "Restoring Financial Stability: How to Repair a Failed System," co-edited by Professors Viral Acharya and Matthew Richardson. The book is a compendium of 18 White Papers by 33 Stern faculty that take an objective look at the causes of the financial crisis and present solutions to repairing the system.

November 1 marked the beginning of an unprecedented collaboration among NYU Stern's leading finance and economic scholars. The goal was to harness the collective intellectual strength and expertise at the Stern School in order to influence policy—during and immediately following the transition to the Obama administration-as the repair of the failed financial system got underway. The result was a systematic approach to analyzing the numerous causes of the financial crisis, and to proposing financial policy alternatives and specific courses of action that aimed to restore the global financial and economic system.

Today, NYU Stern announced the launch of a new research center, the Volatility Institute, created under the leadership of the School’s Nobel Laureate Robert F. Engle, the Michael Armellino Professor of Finance at Stern.

"If we can create social businesses, we can end poverty in the world, and then we'll create poverty museums," explained 2006 Nobel Peace Prize Winner Muhammad Yunus to an audience of 400 in Schimmel Auditorium on January 27.

The third expert panel in a series of three entitled "Transition 2008: Advising America's Next President" with the Council on Foreign Relations, The Economist and NYU Stern convened to discuss US trade policy.

In publishing the first empirical evidence measuring the influence of the political views of states on the volume of buyout activity and outcomes of buyout transactions, NYU Stern Assistant Professor of Management Aviad Pe’er, with Oliver Gottschalg of HEC School of Management in Paris, found that Republican political views positively impact both the volume and performance of buyouts, while the Democratic political views have negative impacts.

At the CEO Series on November 12, Jim McNerney, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Boeing Company, shared his outlook on the financial crisis, giving the more than 300 Stern students and alumni who attended a critically important perspective on some of the global implications of this crisis for a major manufacturer and exporter.

As President-elect Obama transitions into the White House, experts from the Council on Foreign Relations, The Economist and NYU Stern debated the current global financial crisis with a focus on ways to repair a broken economy. Entitled "Transition 2008: Advising America's Next President," this is the first of three events that address global issues as they relate to the US presidency.

On October 24, at NYU Stern for a GE Live event entitled, "Winning in Today's Environment," Immelt spoke to nearly 300 NYU Stern MBA students as well as hundreds more at six other business schools across the globe — London Business School, IESE in Spain, UVA-Darden, Thunderbird, UN,C and Emory — where the event was broadcast live.

As the Dow hits records lows, consumer confidence continues to wane and the Fed crafts plans to stave off a Depression-like era, Dean Thomas Cooley moderated a discussion with industry, media and academic thought-leaders to analyze, and offer solutions for, the current financial crisis.

The panel, moderated and introduced by Dean Thomas Cooley, comprised Profs. Edward Altman, Lawrence White and Roy Smith.

In publishing the first empirical evidence measuring the value of academic research on business school performance, NYU Stern Marketing Professor Peter Golder, with Debanjan Mitra of the University of Florida, use data to challenge the widely publicized 2005 Harvard Business Review opinion-based attack by Bennis and O'Toole on business schools for becoming too focused on research at students' expense. Golder and Mitra's research appears in the September 2008 issue of The Journal of Marketing.

The New York University Leonard N. Stern School of Business and the Swiss Finance Institute announce a new executive learning program to tackle future challenges presented by the global financial system. The specialized executive MBA in Banking and Financial Institutions Management assembles a faculty offering an unrivaled concentration of global expertise in banking and finance.

Amsterdam Institute of Finance (AIF) and New York University Stern School of Business (NYU Stern) are partnering to launch the Executive Master of Science in Risk Management, an innovative, global executive degree program in risk management. This alliance connects two of the world's financial centers and provides a firm response to the current financial turmoil.

The Stern Campus Greening Initiative (SCGI) won "green" at the national Net Impact Green Challenge, an event that recognizes and rewards members of the Net Impact group who are working on tangible projects that make a positive environmental impact on their company, campus or community.

More than $150,000 in seed money and in-kind support was awarded to the winners of the 9th Annual NYU Stern Business Plan Competition. The three winning teams, each lead by NYU students and alumni, were chosen by a panel of seasoned business owners and private investors after successfully pitching their new venture ideas. Taking top honors were business concepts that mirror marketplace trends such as leveraging social networking sites to create unique product offerings and using innovative business models to combat intractable global social issues, including poverty and poor access to quality healthcare.

New York University Stern School of Business and the Tribeca Film Festival have joined forces to offer “Convergence and Cinema at the Tribeca Film Festival,” a new course for undergraduate business students. Offered through Stern’s Entertainment, Media and Technology (EMT) Program, the course will provide students with access to leaders in the entertainment industry and a deeper understanding of the impact multimedia and new distribution channels will have on filmmaking.

With housing prices plummeting, oil approaching $120 a barrel and the global financial system in shambles, a recent NYU Stern event posed the question, "How do we restore confidence in credit markets and the economy?"

With oil over $100 a barrel, the CEO Series on April 8 with John Hofmeister, President of Shell Oil Company, proved to be especially timely and of interest to Stern students and alumni who packed Schimmel Auditorium to hear Mr. Hofmeister speak.

The day after Hilary Clinton's primary wins in Texas and Ohio, further delaying the selection of the Democratic candidate, NYU Stern, The Economist and CFR.org hosted the final debate of the year of the Global Issues in Campaign 2008 series, "Brand America: Can the New President Rescue America's Image."
