The Fifth Annual Society for Financial Econometrics (SoFiE) Conference was hosted by the Oxford-Man Institute and held at the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford this June. Bringing together academics and practitioners from around the world, the conference featured speakers from a number of leading organizations including Banque de France, NYU Stern, Harvard, Stanford and Brown.

On May 30, NYU Stern’s Center for Real Estate Finance Research and Salomon Center for the Study of Financial Institutions and the NYU Pollack Center for Law & Business co-hosted a housing-finance reform roundtable with The Clearing House and Mayer Brown LLP. The roundtable, titled, “The Challenge of Introducing Private Capital into the Housing-Finance Marketplace,” focused on the future of residential mortgage finance.

On Tuesday, May 15, the Center for Real Estate Finance Research, led by Professor Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh, held its inaugural conference.

The winners of this year’s NYU Stern Entrepreneurs Challenge received more than $200,000 in seed money and in-kind support. After pitching their venture ideas, the five winning teams, each led by NYU students, were chosen by a panel of judges from the venture capital, technology and social enterprise sectors.

Leading academics and practitioners gathered for a conference on “Comovement of Volatilities, Returns and Tails,” this spring, organized by Stern’s Volatility Institute, led by Nobel Laureate and Professor Robert Engle.

Scholars from across the country and around the world gathered to share the latest research in the field of network economics at the 2012 Networks, Electronic Commerce and Telecommunications (NET) Institute conference, held in partnership with NYU Stern’s Center for Global Economy and Business.

“Unlocking the value of social media is difficult,” said John Bell, global managing director of Social@Ogilvy, who estimates that just 20 percent of businesses receive 80 percent of potential benefits from social media. As part of NYU Stern’s Center for Measurable Marketing Speaker Series, Bell shared a sales impact study on the value of integrated social media marketing this spring.

On April 19, as part of their Student Luncheon Lecture Series, the NYU Pollack Center for Law and Business hosted Preet Bharara, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York who manages the investigation and litigation of all criminal and civil cases filed on behalf of the United States in New York, Bronx, Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Sullivan counties.

NYU Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation hosted Alex Osterwalder, co-author of Business Model Generation, as part of the Himelberg Speaker Series this Spring. Osterwalder shared insights on how to develop a disruptive business model. His Business Model Canvas, a tool to visualize, challenge and reinvent business models, is used by leading organizations around the world.

Budding entrepreneurs from across NYU convened in Stern’s Paulson Auditorium to hear from Ben Kaufman, CEO and founder of Quirky.com.

Graduate marketing students gathered for a forum with E. Craig Stacey, research director for the NYU Stern Center for Measurable Marketing and founding partner of The Marketing Productivity Group.

Academics and practitioners in the field of financial econometrics from around the world gathered in the Netherlands for a conference on "Measuring and Understanding Asset Price Changes: The Price of Liquidity, and the Liquidity of Price." Co-hosted by The Society for Financial Econometrics (SoFiE), which is housed within the NYU Stern Volatility Institute, and the Tinbergen University in Amsterdam, the event featured keynote speakers Thierry Foucault, HEC, Paris; Pete Kyle, University of Maryland; and Richardo Lagos, NYU. Nobel Laureate Professor Robert Engle’s co-authored research on “Liquidity and Volatility in the US Treasury Market: Evidence from a New Class of Dynamic Order Book Models?” was also presented.

Some 50 academics, practitioners and policymakers gathered at NYU Stern in March for a roundtable discussion on securities litigation post-Dodd-Frank, co-hosted by Stern’s Vincent C. Ross Institute of Accounting and NERA Economic Consulting. Industry experts discussed recent developments in shareholder litigation and regulatory enforcement, the impact of regulatory reform and current academic research.

The NYU Stern Salomon Center for the Study of Financial Institutions recently hosted its third annual conference to explore several controversial issues related to modernizing the sector. The conference included presentations from industry leaders and academics, such as Professors Matthew Richardson, John Biggs, Viral Acharya and Eric Dinallo.

The Penn/NYU Conference, considered the premier annual conference on law and finance, is jointly sponsored by NYU’s Pollack Center for Law & Business, Wharton’s Financial Institutions Center and the University of Pennsylvania’s Institute for Law and Economics. Faculty from top business and law schools will convene at the University of Pennsylvania Law School to hear colleagues present research at the intersection of law and finance. Speakers and moderators include Pollack Center Director William T. Allen and NYU Stern Professors Yakov Amihud, Stephen Brown and David Yermack.

NYU Stern’s Salomon Center holds its annual NASDAQ DRP Research Day Conference where Stern’s finance faculty will present research. New this year will be a panel discussion on the current state of the world economy and financial system.
