WIN is a Social Networks Summit intended to foster collaboration and to build community. The increasing availability of massive networked data is revolutionizing the scientific study of a variety of phenomena in fields as diverse as Computer Science, Economics, Physics and Sociology. WIN brings together leading researchers studying ‘information in networks’ – its distribution, its diffusion, its value, and its influence on social and economic outcomes – in order to lay the foundation for ongoing relationships and to build a lasting multidisciplinary research community.

Researchers studying information in networks gathered at NYU Stern for the third annual Workshop on Information Networks (WIN) Summit, organized by Sinan Aral, assistant professor of information, operations and management sciences; Arun Sundararjan, associate professor of information, operations and management sciences; and Foster Provost, professor of information, operations and management sciences.

More than 450 aspiring entrepreneurs from NYU’s student, alumni and faculty communities gathered in Paulson Auditorium to hear about this year’s Entrepreneurs Challenge. During the official Kick-Off, attendees received information about NYU Stern’s 13th Annual New Venture Competition and 9th Annual Social Venture Competition – both sponsored by Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation – and NYU’s 2nd Annual Technology Venture Competition, hosted by Stern’s Berkley Center and NYU’s Innovation Venture Fund.

Students, alumni and faculty from across the University will have an opportunity to learn about Stern's 13th Annual New Venture Competition and Ninth Annual Social Venture Competition, as well as NYU's Second Annual Technology Venture Competition. Attendees will also hear from previous winners and past judges.

More than 80 academics, marketing professionals and industry experts, convened for NYU Stern’s 2011 Conference on “Measurable Marketing in a Digital World,” hosted by the School’s Center for Measurable Marketing. Participants explored the largest challenges facing advertisers, the latest in digital media, how organizations should be measuring the effectiveness and ROI of digital advertising, and how to take advantage of cross media synergies.

The 2011 NYU Directors’ Institute, hosted by the NYU Pollack Center for Law and Business on May 6, 2011, was themed “Corporate Governance: A New Governance Landscape?” The event featured prominent speakers from a variety of industries discussing topics such as: maintaining high ethical standards and avoiding litigation, successfully navigating mergers and acquisitions, and handling compensation issues. The NYU Directors’ Institute is an annual continuing education program for directors, general counsels and corporate secretaries, designed to strengthen the corporate governance practices of boards of directors and help directors stay up-to-date on their legal, fiduciary and ethical responsibilities.

The NYU Stern Entrepreneurs Challenge, organized by the School’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, is the premier platform for identifying, nurturing and showcasing entrepreneurial talent at NYU. Lasting eight months, it provides aspiring entrepreneurs with frameworks, mentoring and financial support to stimulate new venture creation.

Some 50 academics, practitioners and policymakers gathered at NYU Stern in April for a roundtable discussion on conflicts of interest at credit rating agencies, hosted by Stern’s Vincent C. Ross Institute of Accounting. In light of recent events in the subprime mortgage crisis, the roundtable presenters addressed topics such as the issuer-pays business model, rating triggers, regulations requiring investors to use credit ratings and the history of credit rating agencies.

Faculty from top business and law schools convened on February 25 and 26 to present, discuss and debate their work at the seventh annual NYU/Penn Conference on Law and Finance, jointly sponsored by NYU’s Pollack Center for Law & Business, Wharton’s Financial Institutions Center and the University of Pennsylvania’s Institute for Law and Economics.

Some 50 academics, practitioners and policymakers gathered at NYU Stern in February for a roundtable discussion, co-hosted by Stern’s Vincent C. Ross Institute of Accounting and NERA Economic Consulting, to discuss the recent rise in and future outlook for securities litigation.

Distinguished academics from around the world convened to share their research in the rapidly evolving field of network economics at the Eighth Networks, Electronic Commerce and Telecommunications (NET) Institute conference, held in partnership with NYU Stern’s Entertainment, Media and Technology Program.

More than 100 financial, academic and regulatory representatives participated in the conference, "Managing Counterparty and Systemic Risk Under Dodd-Frank," co-hosted by NYU Stern's Volatility Institute and the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC).

In November, the NYU Pollack Center for Law and Business, a joint initiative between NYU Stern School of Business and NYU School of Law, co-hosted the 1950th Meeting of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, “Challenges to Business & Society in the 21st Century: The Way Forward.” Rajat Gupta, senior partner emeritus and former managing director at McKinsey & Company, and Roger Ferguson, president and CEO of TIAA-CREF, spoke about recovery and reform, and long-term financial security, respectively.

Organized by NYU Stern Professor Jill Kickul, the conference explored the latest strategies for measuring social impact.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the combined Information, Operation and Management Sciences (IOMS) Department, and current IOMS faculty gathered to celebrate this milestone with an event held October 29 at NYU's Torch Club. Looking back, former professor Ernest Kurnow recounts the roots of what is now the IOMS Department.

In light of the Financial Accounting Stands Board’s (FASB) proposed expansion of fair value accounting principles for financial institutions, a group of scholars, industry experts, professionals and press convened for a roundtable entitled, “Are Investors and Investment Entities Well-Served by Fair Value Accounting.”

Stephen Figlewski, Professor of Finance and an expert on derivatives, welcomes the audience to the 2010 Salomon Center NASDAQ OMX Derivatives Research Project (DRP). The DRP Research Day was created in 1996; today the Salomon Center-NASDAQ OMX DRP Research Day enables Stern's finance faculty to present some of their current research.

Stephen Figlewski, Professor of Finance and Director of the NASDAQ OMX Derivatives Research Project, welcomes an audience of nearly 120 to the 2010 NASDAQ OMX Derivatives Research Project and The Volatility Institute's Symposium on "Derivatives and Proprietary Trading in the New Regulatory Regime."

Will the overseas expansion of Chinese and other BRIC companies change the face of capitalism? How should American and European companies increase their footprint in Asia? How should protectionism and sovereign wealth funds be addressed? These are some of the questions that will be posed at the third annual ‘International Symposium on Cross-Border Investment and M&A’ to be held at New York University, hosted by NYU’s Pollack Center for Law and Business on Tuesday, October 19, 2010.

NYU Stern's Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation hosted a Lunchtime Chat with NYU alumnus Dennis Crowley, co-founder and CEO of Foursquare, a mobile application for social networking with some three million users worldwide. This event was presented as part of the David & Rose Himelberg Speaker Series.

At an intimate reception on October 5, sponsored by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, Princeton University Press and NYU Stern, William Baumol, Harold Price Professor of Entrepreneurship and academic director of Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, was honored for his most recently published book, The Microtheory of Innovative Entrepreneurship.

On September 22, Robin Chase spoke candidly to an audience of aspiring entrepreneurs about how she grew Zipcar into the world’s largest car-sharing service. As part of the David & Rose Himelberg Speaker Series, the event was hosted by NYU Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation.

In September, NYU Stern hosted WIN – Workshop on Information in Networks – to bring together leading researchers across disciplines studying ‘information in networks.’ The conference was attended by speakers and participants from top companies and universities, including Google Research, HP Labs, IBM, Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, Harvard University, MIT, NYU Stern, Stanford University, University of Cambridge, and University of Pennsylvania.

Professor Edward Altman, a world-renowned expert in the field of corporate bankruptcy, distressed debt and credit risk analysis, started off the event discussing "How the Financial Crisis Has Affected the Credit Markets."
