Only At Stern: Interim Dean and Professor J.P. Eggers, Innovating in Business Education and Entrepreneurial Thinking

J.P. Eggers is the Catherine & Peter Kellner Professor of Entrepreneurship and was appointed Interim Dean of NYU Stern in July 2024.

His research spans technological change, decision-making under uncertainty, and new product development. He studies the challenges faced by managers and executives in making good decisions and addressing new opportunities in emerging technologies.

In his research, Dean Eggers has examined: firms that backed the wrong technology, how video game publishers transition across console generations, and why organizations expand their product portfolios based on shared customers instead of shared technologies, among other topics. Much of this work involves close collaboration with PhD students.

Dean Eggers, a Professor of Management and Organizations, joined Stern in 2008 and from 2018-2024, he served as Vice Dean for MBA and Graduate Programs. In this role, he led the introduction of several innovative programs and initiatives.

He is the founding Academic Director of the Andre Koo Technology and Entrepreneurship MBA Program, a novel MBA program that is lauded by the tech industry and has seen increased demand year after year.

He also led the launch of:

  • the Online-Modular Option as part of the Langone Part-time MBA Program, increasing format flexibility
  • SternWorks, now a hallmark Full-time MBA experience that helps bring MBA talent to small businesses
  • and the Executive-in-Residence program, which prioritizes diversifying the career opportunities for MBA students

Dean Eggers has taught across graduate programs at Stern and his courses have ranged from the intro MBA strategy core class to an advanced elective in strategy to courses in decision-making using data, analytics, and experiments as well as hands-on experiential learning courses in entrepreneurship and technology development.

He has earned several awards for his teaching, including Poets & Quants’ Top 40 Professors Under 40 in 2011 and he was named the Stern MBA Program’s Professor of the Year in 2010.
