Leaders can’t afford to take a ‘wait and see’ approach to generative AI; they need a plan for applying it competitively, argue Bharat N. Anand and Andy Wu. They introduce a strategic framework for deciding where and how to deploy the technology, focusing on two factors: the cost of errors and the type of knowledge required. Tasks grounded in explicit, codifiable data are well suited to gen AI. But when mistakes could carry serious harm—or when work requires empathy, ethical reasoning, contextual judgment, or intuition—human oversight remains essential.”
