Only At Stern: Professor Michael Dickstein, Creating the Hub at Stern for the Business of Healthcare

As the Founding Director of NYU Stern's Healthcare Initiative, Professor Michael Dickstein prepares students to lead and shape the future business of healthcare, one of the world's largest industries. 

What is Stern’s Healthcare Initiative?

Through the Initiative’s events, research, and hands-on programs, students gain knowledge about the workings of healthcare markets and first-hand experience at companies.

The Initiative’s mission is to “Strengthen Stern’s thought leadership in the business of healthcare; to provide mentoring and learning opportunities for students seeking careers in the industry; and to deepen our connections to the vibrant healthcare community across NYU and New York City,” Dickstein said in a Healthcare Initiative newsletter.

Under Professor Dickstein’s leadership, the Healthcare Initiative established the Contractor Program in Healthcare and Contractor Fellows in Healthcare, supported by the generosity of alumni Ashish Contractor (BS ‘97) and Amy Lung Contractor (BS ‘00).

These programs help connect Stern students with leading companies, including bringing Sternies on an MBA trek to Tempus AI, a technology company leading the adoption of AI to advance precision medicine.

What does Professor Dickstein research?

Professor Dickstein researches industrial organization and health economics. Recent papers explore how patient prices influence prescription drug adoption and how re-defining the boundaries of a health insurance pool may lead to greater enrollment.

A through-line of his work is to develop modeling tools that capture the complexities of healthcare markets from uncertain product quality to imperfect competition.

What is the impact of Professor Dickstein’s research?

Professor Dickstein’s work influences policymakers and regulators, informing them as they make decisions about healthcare market designs. And his impact extends beyond Stern.

His research is taught in doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate courses at top schools including Harvard, Yale, Northwestern, Penn, Emory, and UNC.

At Stern, Professor Dickstein brings his research and ideas into his own classroom and outside of the classroom, he works closely with student groups like the MBA Stern Healthcare Association (SHA), co-hosting events and bringing healthcare’s industry leaders and alumni to campus.

In 2021, Poets&Quants named Professor Dickstein as one of the Best 40-Under-40 MBA Professors, recognizing him for both research and teaching.
