Biography

Andrew Foley joined New York University Stern School of Business as an Assistant Professor of Management and Organizations in June 2025.

Foley’s research examines how social and interorganizational networks influence the success or failure of new ventures. He focuses on the unintended consequences of structures typically seen as beneficial to entrepreneurs – such as social networks, status hierarchies, and norms of reciprocity – highlighting how these same structures can sometimes constrain or mislead them or their stakeholders. Drawing on contexts including high-growth tech firms, family businesses, and private equity markets, his work explores how social capital shapes strategic decisions, access to resources, and long-term outcomes in early-stage firms. His research and teaching reflect a broader commitment to understanding how social structure and context shape entrepreneurial strategy, and to helping founders navigate these forces more effectively.

Before joining NYU Stern, Foley was a Venture for America fellow, management consultant, and professional classical musician.

He received his PhD in Management and Organizations from Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management, where he also completed a minor concentration in Applied Statistics through the School of Statistics and Data Science. At Cornell, he held leadership roles in research initiatives focused on entrepreneurship, emerging markets, and family business.
