John Mandyck is an adjunct professor for sustainability. He has a unique and early view on global sustainability trends, matched with 30-year market experience.
He currently serves as the CEO for Urban Green Council, a nonprofit organization based in New York City dedicated to decarbonizing buildings for healthy and resilient communities. Since 2018, John helped triple the organization's reach with research, public policy development and education, shaping some of the world's foremost climate laws for real estate and buildings. His role provides insight to the impacts of urbanization, climate disruption, energy grid transition, environmental policy and fast-moving changes to the built environment.
He is the retired global Chief Sustainability Officer for United Technologies Corporation (UTC), a publicly traded, Fortune 45, $60B revenue-building systems and aerospace leader with brands such as Carrier air conditioning, Otis elevator and Pratt & Whitney jet engines. He acquired senior executive business experience at the global corporation helping to meet the demands of shareholders, customers, joint venture partners, communities and employees. During his 25-year UTC career, John built the company's multinational sustainability presence and led business unit marketing, brand development, crisis communications and government relations with experience in 53 countries.
He's also an adjunct professor for sustainability at the University of Connecticut School of Business.
John was a visiting scientist at the Harvard University T.H. Chan School of Public Health and co-authored the book Food Foolish, which explores the hidden connection between food waste, hunger and climate change. He's published on sustainability trends in Harvard Business Review, The Economist and other outlets.
John holds a master's degree in public administration and a bachelor's degree in policy studies from the Syracuse University Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, where he is the recipient of its 2024 Centennial Changemaker Award for Environmental Stewardship. He also completed executive education at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business.
