The Four-School Conference brought together faculty, students and researchers from NYU Stern, Columbia Business School, Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale School of Management

On Friday, April 28, NYU Stern's Volatility & Risk Institute presented its Fourth Annual Conference, titled, “Managing Compound Risks in a Polycrisis World.” Professor Robert Engle and Professor Richard Berner, Co-Directors of the Institute, hosted the event.

A sampling of media highlights for the week of April 25, 2023

On Tuesday, April 25, the NYU Department of Accounting and The Vincent C. Ross Institute of Accounting Research hosted Sherron Watkins, Enron whistleblower, for a fireside chat on the "Leadership Lessons from the Enron Scandal and the Importance of Whistleblowing" followed by a moderated Q&A with the audience. The discussion was moderated by Professor Amal Shehata.

Excerpt from Poets & Quants — "Upon arriving at Stern, I was advised to at least try out the consulting recruiting process, led by the MCA (Management Consulting Association). In the best case, I would find a career that was the right fit for me. In the worst case, I would be very prepared for spring recruiting. As it turned out, the best-case scenario quickly came true, and I ended up recruiting successfully for consulting."

Excerpt from Forbes -- "New York University offers various online and hybrid learning programs, including taxation, journalism, cybersecurity and health administration. Some programs are entirely online; others, like the quantitative management degree, include a few days of in-person instruction and networking."

This year's theme is AI and fintech, including both the light and dark sides of automation. For example, we will have a speaker on Deep Fakes, an academic panel on post-FTX crypto governance, "meme-ifcation" of investing, etc.

Excerpt from Financial Times -- "Anyway, another huge factor in SVB was the massive size of the uninsured depositor base, coupled with its unhedged bond portfolio. Historically, interest rate risks was seen to have a natural hedge in deposits. When rates rise and the value of assets fall, the low-cost deposit funding becomes more valuable.

"But as a paper by Itamar Drechsler, Alexi Savov, Philipp Schnabl and Olivier Wang points out, the 'deposit franchise is only valuable if depositors remain in the bank.'"

On Monday, April 17, NYU Stern’s Business and Society Program (BSP) hosted the 2023 Ashok C. Sani Distinguished Scholar-In-Residence Lecture, delivered by Tom Szaky, CEO of TerraCycle, and moderated by Batia Wiesenfeld, Director of the Business & Society Program. This year's talk was entitled, "Eliminating the Idea of Waste: The TerraCycle Story of Purposeful Capitalism to Help Make Our World More Circular."

This year’s SWIB Conference will be about Allyship! We’ll be taking a 360 view of the topic and discussing not only how women need allies, but also how women can be allies. We intend to foster conversations with two goals in mind – educate and actualize.

Excerpt from Poets & Quants — "Dan Schulman is making a homecoming of his own at New York University’s Stern School. An ’86 Stern grad and CEO of PayPal, Schulman is performing the speaking honors at the May 19th MBA Convocation."

The NYU Stern School of Business is hosting three in-person graduation ceremonies this May to recognize graduates from the Class of 2023. These events will spotlight several speakers, including distinguished alumni, industry leaders, faculty, and students.

O'Neil joins NYU Stern's Steven Altman for a virtual "fireside chat" about her new book, The Globalization Myth: Why Regions Matter (Yale University Press, October 2022), which chronicles the rise of three main global manufacturing and supply chain hubs and what they mean for U.S. economic competitiveness.

On Tuesday, April 4, NYU Stern hosted a panel discussion titled "SVB and Beyond: Understanding the Banking Stress and Ways Forward." 

On Tuesday, April 4, join NYU Stern Corporate Relations and the Center for the Future of Management for a fireside chat with José Muñoz, Global President and COO of Hyundai Motor Company and President and CEO of Hyundai and Genesis Motor North America. Vice Dean J.P. Eggers will moderate the discussion.

On Monday, March 27, NYU Stern's Center for Global Economy and Business, Volatility and Risk Institute, and Center for Sustainable Business co-hosted a Public Talk and Q&A with Laurence Boone, French Minister of State for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
