NYU Stern is grateful for donors' support of undergraduate and graduate scholarships, which allow high-achieving students to access and take full advantage of a world-class business education at Stern. To celebrate the transformative power of scholarship, NYU Stern is proud to host the Sixth Annual Scholarship Reception and bring together our generous donors and their accomplished scholarship recipients.

The 2017 Scholarship Reception will take place on Tuesday, March 7, 2017. Dean Peter Henry and Dean Geeta Menon will welcome our esteemed guests and featured donor speakers, Edward Barr, BS '57, and Nomi Ghez, ADCRT '81, as well as student scholarship speakers Anne Gregory, MBA '17, and Katie Anderson, BS '17.

Edward E. Barr, BS '57

Benefactor, Ed and Nancy Barr Opportunity Scholarship

Edward E. Barr, BS ‘57 has served on Stern’s Board of Overseers since 1996. Mr. Barr spent the majority of his career at Sun Chemical, rising through the ranks from assistant to president. Mr. Barr served as the company’s chairman, president, and CEO for 17 years until 2003.
 
An economist by training, Dr. Barr received his Master of Science in Economics from the University of Michigan and participated in the PhD program in Economics at New York University from 1959 to 1961. Later, he completed M.I.T.'s Senior Executive Program. He was elected an NYU Albert Gallatin Fellow in 1979 and a life member of the Albert Gallatin Associates in 1984. He was awarded honorary degrees by the New Jersey Institute of Technology (doctor of science; honoris causa) and Monmouth College (doctor of laws). A graduate of New York University's Stern School of Business with BS in 1957, where he was named a distinguished alumnus of NYU and awarded the John T. Madden Memorial Medal in 1978.

Mr. Barr has served as a director of Wachovia Bank, Chairman of United Water/Suez, a leading provider of water and waste management, and was a trustee of Northwestern Mutual Life. He also served as Chairman of the New Jersey Higher Education Board and founding Chairman of the New Jersey Science and Technology Commission. Mr. Barr is currently Chairman of cPacket Networks Inc., a Silicon Valley based leader in computer network monitoring and a director of the newly formed Seton Hall University/Hackensack Medical University Medical College.

Ed and his wife Nancy established the Ed and Nancy Barr Opportunity Scholarship, an Access Initiative Scholarship, in 2014 which covers full tuition, fees, and room and board for two Breakthrough Scholars so that they graduate debt free. Providing the chance for students to attend NYU Stern who otherwise would not have the opportunity is dear to him.
 

Nomi Ghez, ADCRT '81

Benefactor, Advancement of Women in Business Scholarship


Dr. Nomi P. Ghez, Ph.D. is the Co-Founding Partner of Circle Financial Group, LLC (CFG), an integrated wealth-management company. Dr. Ghez runs her family office, serves on a number of for-profit and not-for-profit boards, and consults in her specific areas of expertise - consumer product companies and stocks as well as investment management in general. She served as Managing Director and Partner of Goldman Sachs until 203.
 
Dr. Ghez serves on the boards of Lipman Family Farms and Conyers Park Acquisition Corporation, where she is also a member of the audit committee. She served as a Director at Maidenform Brands, Inc. from December 2011 to October 2013, when the company was acquired by Hanesbrands. She is on the boards of a number non-profit organizations, including the business school of Tel Aviv University, The Jewish Museum, NYU Stern, and is on the Advisory Council of Michael Price Student Investment Fund at NYU Stern.

Dr. Ghez obtained her Ph.D from NYU, and she also holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Tel Aviv University.
 
Dr. Ghez joined Stern’s Board of Overseers in 2005. In 2016 she established the Advancement of Women in Business Scholarship, an Access Initiative Scholarship, which aims to provide financial assistance meeting the full need of four bright Breakthrough Scholars, with the goal of empowering deserving women in American business.
 

Anne Gregory, MBA '17

Anne GregoryRecipient, The Howard Gilman Foundation Scholarship

For nearly two decades, Anne Gregory has been a devotee of classical music. Anne started playing flute & piccolo at the age of 12, attended the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem NC, and received a Bachelor’s in Music Performance from the New England Conservatory (NEC) in Boston MA. Anne's passion for music led to a career of arts education and community engagement, first with the NPR radio show From the Top and then with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. During that time, she co-developed a community performance program in Jamaica Plain (August Noise JP), chaired the James Pappoutsakis Flute Competition, and worked with NEC students in arts entrepreneurism.

To expand her professional network and business acumen, Anne chose to pursue an MBA at Stern. She is a member of the 2016-2017 Leadership Fellows Cohort, is an active board member of multiple student organizations, and performs with the NYU Community Orchestra. Building on a career of marketing the arts to new audiences, Anne will bring her talents and enthusiasm to Colgate-Palmolive's marketing department come the fall of 2017.
 

Katie Anderson, BS '17

Katie AndersonRecipient, the John A. Paulson Scholarship

Katie Anderson is a senior concentrating in Business Economics. In her time at Stern, she has worked as an Orientation Leader and Cohort Leadership Program Guide. She also supervises community development in the NYU Admissions Ambassador program. In Spring 2015, Katie spent a semester at NYU Shanghai and still really misses eating dumplings every day. The following summer, she interned at Local Initiatives Support Corporation, where she learned firsthand about socially responsible investing. In her free time, Katie enjoys knitting and going on adventures around New York City.
