Only At Stern: Professor Robert Seamans, a Leading Expert on Technology, Innovation, and Strategy

Robert Seamans is a Professor of Management and Organizations at NYU Stern, teaching courses in AI, game theory, and strategy. He serves as Director of Stern’s Center for the Future of Management, now in its fifth year, which fosters cutting-edge research on major shifts in the global business landscape, and the challenges and opportunities they present.

Professor Seamans’ research explores how firms use technology in their strategic interactions with each other and the economic consequences of AI, robotics, and other advanced technologies. His work has been published in leading academic journals.

His recent work examines how AI is reshaping jobs and competition, including the Artificial Intelligence Occupational Exposure (AIOE) measure he co-developed to determine an occupation's exposure to AI. Professor Seamans recently received $80,000 in funding from the Microsoft AI Economy Institute to study ways to integrate AI into undergraduate and MBA courses.

He serves on editorial boards for Management Science and Strategy Science and organizes conferences on AI policy and strategy.

  • In 2015–2016, Professor Seamans served as the Senior Economist for technology and innovation on President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers. In this role, his policy work focused on issues involving AI, robotics, broadband access, as well as technology competition and regulation
  • His work was cited in the 2024 Economic Report of the President
  • Professor Seamans’ work has also been included in commentary from the Federal Reserve, the International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook, and more 
  • He is a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and he has received research funding from the Hewlett Foundation, the Kauffman Foundation, and the National Science Foundation, among others
