Ajit Patwardhan, MD, MS, MBA
Executive MBA alumnus Ajit Patwardhan has made a number of professional changes within the last few years, most notably, making a successful transition from the medical industry to investment banking. He was a practicing physician before he made a career switch to working for a medical device start up company, Paradigm Spine LLC, in 2006. As an orthopedic and spine surgeon, Ajit was able to apply his medical expertise to this job using his medical background and orthopedic knowledge; however, he still felt the need to sharpen his business skills. In particular, he wanted to improve his ability to assess and analyze medical technologies. He set a goal of running his own enterprise, and after researching MBA programs, he felt the Executive MBA program at NYU Stern was a logical choice.

After taking several courses at NYU Stern, Ajit developed a strong interest in finance. He became particularly interested in investment banking, and in firms that evaluate medical investment opportunities. Ajit utilized Stern’s broad range of career resources, including one-on-one counseling, networking events with Stern alumni, industry conferences in his pursuit of new job opportunities. In fact, his career breakthrough with an investment bank came through an opportunity posted on Stern’s Career Center for Working Professionals (CCWP).

Ajit now works as a Vice President, Investment Banking at HealthPro BioVentures LLC, where he leads his company’s team in the medical and orthopedic device sector. HealthPro BioVentures is a boutique life sciences and health care focused Investment Bank that specializes in strategic M&A, licensing and partnering in the domestic and international pharmaceutical / medical devices and diagnostics industry. Ajit credits the career counseling services at NYU Stern with helping him successfully transition: “I consider myself lucky to have entered the Investment Banking sector (IB) during these economic times without an IB background. The networking contacts I made through Stern helped me land this job.”
