With countries around the globe grappling with how best to curb global warming and reduce the world’s carbon footprint, NYU Stern’s Citi Leadership and Ethics Program is focusing on how to apply market-based approaches to address environmental issues and foster economic growth.

Eighth Annual NYU Stern-Citi Conference in Leadership & Ethics on "Business 4 Government: Leveraging Eco-Efficiency at the Local Level"

New York University Stern School of Business will no longer require Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Exam (GRE) test scores from candidates applying to its Executive MBA program, effective immediately. Applicants will still have the option to submit either GMAT or GRE scores with their application, but it will not be a requirement.

Does leisure-blogging in the workplace help or hurt productivity over the long term? According to Anindya Ghose, NYU Stern Associate Professor of Information, Operations and Management Sciences, and his colleagues Yan Huang and Param Vir Singh from Carnegie Mellon University, blogging helps. When organizations have lax rules on leisure blogging, it positively affects the writing and sharing of work-related blog posts and creates opportunities for strengthening employee networks.

In February, NYU Stern generated nearly 650 media hits. Stern faculty were featured for their research and perspectives on a variety of subjects including systemic risk, entrepreneurship, CEO compensation, the flash crash and Middle East unrest in a number of prominent outlets such as CNBC, The Economist and The Wall Street Journal. Additionally, in 51 op-eds, Stern faculty discussed the Deutsche Boerse-NYSE Euronext merger, public sector unions, QE2, employee activism and the economic and intellectual benefits of cities.

William C. Dudley, president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, shared his outlook for economic activity in the United States, employment and inflation, and described the implications for monetary policy before an audience of approximately 200 NYU Stern students, faculty and alumni in Paulson Auditorium.

Emil Tedeschi, founder, president and CEO of Atlantic Grupa in Croatia, provided an energetic and fascinating presentation to NYU Stern Executive MBA students.

Faculty from top business and law schools convened on February 25 and 26 to present, discuss and debate their work at the seventh annual NYU/Penn Conference on Law and Finance, jointly sponsored by NYU’s Pollack Center for Law & Business, Wharton’s Financial Institutions Center and the University of Pennsylvania’s Institute for Law and Economics.

Some 50 academics, practitioners and policymakers gathered at NYU Stern in February for a roundtable discussion, co-hosted by Stern’s Vincent C. Ross Institute of Accounting and NERA Economic Consulting, to discuss the recent rise in and future outlook for securities litigation.

William H. Joyce Professor of Marketing Russell Winer accepted the AMA/Irwin/McGraw-Hill Distinguished Marketing Educator Award at the AMA’s 2011 Winter Marketing Educators’ Conference on February 19 in Austin, Texas. Established in 1985, the award is given annually to a long-standing leader in marketing education who has made extensive and sustained contributions to the marketing discipline. It is designed to be the highest honor a marketing educator can receive.

To mark the establishment of the Alan Greenspan Chair in Economics, Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan (BS ’48, MA ’50, PhD ’77, Honorary Doctorate of Commercial Science ’05) was interviewed by John A. Paulson (BS ’78), the president of Paulson & Co. Inc, before a packed auditorium of more than 400 students, faculty and alumni.

Stern faculty were featured for their research and perspectives on a variety of subjects including consumer color preferences, global financial regulation, accounting fraud, body language and art market valuation in a number of prominent outlets such as Bloomberg Businessweek, Financial Times and The New York Times. Additionally, in 40 op-eds, Stern faculty discussed clean technology investment, the importance of studying communications in business, Starbucks’s new logo, the Arizona shootings, Steve Jobs’s medical leave and solutions to the Greek debt.

Two of NYU Stern’s faculty members have recently received prestigious awards, each given to researchers under the age of 40, for their research to date and respective contributions to their fields. Xavier Gabaix, Martin J. Gruber Chair in Asset Management, has been awarded the 2011 Fischer Black Prize. Alexander Ljungqvist, Ira Rennert Chair in Finance and Entrepreneurship, received the 2011 Ewing Marion Kauffman Prize Medal for Distinguished Research in Entrepreneurship.

Xavier Gabaix, Professor of Finance and Martin J. Gruber Chair in Asset Management, and his colleagues received a certificate of excellence from the TIAA-CREF Institute for their paper, “The Age of Reason: Financial Decisions over the Life Cycle with Implications for Regulation.” In the paper, the authors analyze 10 different types of credit behavior of people of different ages and conclude that younger and older adults may need additional guidance with respect to financial matters; they find that the "age of reason" (when people make the fewest financial mistakes) is 53 years old.

Stern faculty were featured for their research and perspectives on a variety of subjects including risk calculation, brands replacing religion as a source of self-worth, detection of proprietary trading and the economic outlook for emerging economies in a number of prominent outlets such as Bloomberg, CNBC and The Wall Street Journal. Additionally, in 34 op-eds, Stern faculty discussed the Wikileaks data dump, President Obama’s tax cut deal, overcompensation of financial sector employees, Russia and Qatar as World Cup sites and the gold investment boom.

In an effort to spark innovation and expand entrepreneurship opportunities, NYU is launching the Technology Venture Competition this fall. The competition, which is open to NYU students, faculty and researchers, has a top prize of $75,000 to the winners. The Entrepreneurs Challenge, launched in 1999, is the premier platform for identifying, nurturing and showcasing entrepreneurial talent at NYU. In addition to the newly created Technology Venture Competition, the Entrepreneurs Challenge includes the Annual New Venture Competition and the Social Venture Competition.

Additionally, in some 40 op-eds, Stern faculty discussed entrepreneurship, TSA screenings, the ramifications of the 2010 midterm elections, Michelle Obama’s market-moving fashion choices and fossil fuels.

NASA, the White House and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) outpace other public sector organizations when it comes to social media savvy and online strategy, according to the first annual Digital IQ Index® for the Public Sector.

Distinguished academics from around the world convened to share their research in the rapidly evolving field of network economics at the Eighth Networks, Electronic Commerce and Telecommunications (NET) Institute conference, held in partnership with NYU Stern’s Entertainment, Media and Technology Program.

Convening approximately 130 industry experts, NYU Stern MBA students and alumni, and academics, the Eighth Annual Future of TV Conference focused on digital media and innovation in today’s rapidly changing TV industry. Hosted by Digital Media Wire, in association with NYU Stern and the Consumer Electronics Association, the event was co-chaired by Professor Al Lieberman, executive director of NYU Stern’s Entertainment, Media and Technology Program, and Ned Sherman, CEO and publisher of Digital Media Wire.

More than 100 financial, academic and regulatory representatives participated in the conference, "Managing Counterparty and Systemic Risk Under Dodd-Frank," co-hosted by NYU Stern's Volatility Institute and the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC).

More than 100 representatives from the financial, academic and regulatory communities participated in a forum sponsored by NYU Stern's Volatility Institute and the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation that discussed cutting-edge thinking and approaches to achieving the risk mitigation goals under The Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

In November, the NYU Pollack Center for Law and Business, a joint initiative between NYU Stern School of Business and NYU School of Law, co-hosted the 1950th Meeting of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, “Challenges to Business & Society in the 21st Century: The Way Forward.” Rajat Gupta, senior partner emeritus and former managing director at McKinsey & Company, and Roger Ferguson, president and CEO of TIAA-CREF, spoke about recovery and reform, and long-term financial security, respectively.

“New York is the apple of the universe,” said Felix Rohatyn, Lazard investment banker, former US Ambassador to France and author of Dealings: A Political and Financial Life, before an auditorium filled with close to 150 students and alumni from NYU Stern, as well as students from NYU’s School of Law and Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.
