A Message of Support from Stern’s Leadership
Dear Members of the Stern Community,
Words cannot do justice to the horrifying news and images to which many of us woke up on Saturday, of a brutal attack on Israeli civilians within its borders that left hundreds—including young children—dead, families dismembered, and many others kidnapped and whose whereabouts are unknown, acts of unbridled terrorism that deserve the strongest possible condemnation. Nor is it possible to rationalize and come to terms with the suffering that is now encompassing the entire region as war rages on, cutting short and maiming thousands more of Israeli and Palestinian lives. The violence shows no signs of abating.
As a consequence, many in our community have been left traumatized. Suffering knows no borders.
At times like these, it is more important than ever to recall Martin Luther King Jr.’s magnificent words that, as human beings, we are “caught in an inescapable net of mutuality.” We must not tolerate demonizing entire populations based on group identity. We must renew our commitment to support each other and to stand united. This is the bedrock of what makes Stern Stern, a community in which everyone feels connected, supported, and included.
We invite each of you who feels in need of help or support to reach out to us or our offices. Please remember that support and resources are available to everyone. Students can find 24/7 support through the Wellness Exchange, and employees can access resources through NYU’s Employee Assistance Program. The Office of Spiritual Life offers opportunities for anyone to engage in multifaith and mindfulness practices, including access to religious centers, prayer spaces, and meditation rooms.
