At the NYU Stern Salmon Center conference on “Bankruptcy and the Financial Crisis,” Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank President Thomas M. Hoenig spoke out against the government’s current stance on large financial institutions.

The Society for Financial Econometrics (SoFiE), an international society founded by NYU Stern Nobel Laureate Professor Robert Engle and University of North Carolina Professor Eric Ghysels and housed within Stern's Volatility Institute, held its second annual conference and inaugural European conference in Geneva, Switzerland this June.

On June 4, 2009, a group of twenty people comprised of senior business and law faculty and business practitioners (and including among their numbers a small contingent of former senior government officials) was jointly convened by The Aspen Institute and New York University with support from Ernst & Young to discuss responses to the current economic crisis and to explore the role of financial market regulations in fostering economic recovery and growth.

As advancements across network industries take shape and public policymakers race to keep up with today’s dynamic marketplace, a group of distinguished academics gathered this May at NYU Stern for the Sixth Annual NET Institute Conference.

As part of NYU Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurial Studies Himelberg Speaker Series, Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes recently spoke with a select group of entrepreneurs from Stern’s student, faculty and alumni communities.

The NYU Pollack Center for Law & Business, a joint initiative between NYU Stern School of Business and NYU School of Law, in May hosted its seventh annual Directors’ Institute, entitled, “Board Monitoring of Risk Management.”

NYU Stern Salomon Center, in partnership with Nasdaq OMX, recently hosted an all-day conference discussing the future of derivatives. New research in the area was presented by Stern faculty and faculty from other schools including Columbia Business School and UCLA.

These Stern faculty, along with many of their colleagues, developed 18 independent policy papers offering market-focused solutions to the financial crisis, which were published in the book "Restoring Financial Stability: How to Repair a Failed System."

With ailing U.S. automakers receiving government bailouts, the CEO Series on April 7 with Stefan Jacoby, President and Chief Executive Officer of Volkswagen of America, Inc., proved to be especially timely and of interest to the hundreds of NYU Stern students and alumni who attended to hear Jacoby speak.

NYU Stern hosted an event for alumni and the media to discuss the ideas in the book, "Restoring Financial Stability: How to Repair a Failed System," co-edited by Professors Viral Acharya and Matthew Richardson. The book is a compendium of 18 White Papers by 33 Stern faculty that take an objective look at the causes of the financial crisis and present solutions to repairing the system.

"If we can create social businesses, we can end poverty in the world, and then we'll create poverty museums," explained 2006 Nobel Peace Prize Winner Muhammad Yunus to an audience of 400 in Schimmel Auditorium on January 27.

The third expert panel in a series of three entitled "Transition 2008: Advising America's Next President" with the Council on Foreign Relations, The Economist and NYU Stern convened to discuss US trade policy.

At the CEO Series on November 12, Jim McNerney, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Boeing Company, shared his outlook on the financial crisis, giving the more than 300 Stern students and alumni who attended a critically important perspective on some of the global implications of this crisis for a major manufacturer and exporter.

As President-elect Obama transitions into the White House, experts from the Council on Foreign Relations, The Economist and NYU Stern debated the current global financial crisis with a focus on ways to repair a broken economy. Entitled "Transition 2008: Advising America's Next President," this is the first of three events that address global issues as they relate to the US presidency.

On October 24, at NYU Stern for a GE Live event entitled, "Winning in Today's Environment," Immelt spoke to nearly 300 NYU Stern MBA students as well as hundreds more at six other business schools across the globe — London Business School, IESE in Spain, UVA-Darden, Thunderbird, UN,C and Emory — where the event was broadcast live.

As the Dow hits records lows, consumer confidence continues to wane and the Fed crafts plans to stave off a Depression-like era, Dean Thomas Cooley moderated a discussion with industry, media and academic thought-leaders to analyze, and offer solutions for, the current financial crisis.

The panel, moderated and introduced by Dean Thomas Cooley, comprised Profs. Edward Altman, Lawrence White and Roy Smith.

With housing prices plummeting, oil approaching $120 a barrel and the global financial system in shambles, a recent NYU Stern event posed the question, "How do we restore confidence in credit markets and the economy?"

With oil over $100 a barrel, the CEO Series on April 8 with John Hofmeister, President of Shell Oil Company, proved to be especially timely and of interest to Stern students and alumni who packed Schimmel Auditorium to hear Mr. Hofmeister speak.

The day after Hilary Clinton's primary wins in Texas and Ohio, further delaying the selection of the Democratic candidate, NYU Stern, The Economist and CFR.org hosted the final debate of the year of the Global Issues in Campaign 2008 series, "Brand America: Can the New President Rescue America's Image."

Exploring the latest strategies and techniques to measure an organization's social impact, more than 150 entrepreneurs, investors, philanthropists and academics gathered for the Fifth Annual NYU Stern Satter Conference of Social Entrepreneurs this November.

With millions of legal and illegal immigrants in the country, immigration is a hot button topic in the current US Presidential campaign. On "Super Tuesday," NYU Stern, The Economist and the Council on Foreign Relations.org held a panel discussion about immigration, entitled, "The Immigration Balancing Act: Border Security, Cheap Labor and US Jobs," the third in a series of events focusing on global issues as they relate to the election.

On November 12, 2007 Thomas F. Cooley, Dean of the NYU Stern School of Business; Amity Schlaes, Senior Fellow for Economic History at the Council on Foreign Relations; and Matthew Bishop, Editor and New York Bureau Chief at the Economist debated global trade issues as they relate to the 2008 American Presidential election.

NYU Stern's Office of Alumni Affairs and Annual Giving, the NYU Stern Alumni Council Finance Committee and the Stern Salomon Center for Research in Financial Institutions and Markets recently co-hosted a panel discussion on the subprime credit crisis.
