Former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson was interviewed by Morgan Stanley Chairman John Mack before an audience of hundreds of NYU Stern, Law School and Wagner Graduate School of Public Service students and alumni on March 3 at the Stern School of Business. CNN Money taped the event and broadcast it intermittently the following day.

Morgan Stanley Chairman John Mack was on campus March 2 to address leadership development with NYU Stern MBA students in an intimate classroom setting. Interviewed by Stern Professor Diana Mayer, who teaches the MBA elective course Authentic Leadership Development, Mack spoke about the lessons he learned from leading on Wall Street, day to day and in times of crisis.

Naomi Klein, author of Shock Doctrine, and NYU Stern Dean Peter Henry spoke to undergraduate students in the course, “Business and Its Publics,” a part of the Social Impact Core requirement for all Stern freshmen, about big picture issues in today’s global markets.

As part of NYU Stern’s Berkley Center Himelberg Speaker Series, David Rose, an Inc. 500 CEO and serial entrepreneur, shared his experience with students and alumni on early-stage financing for startups.

As part of NYU Stern’s CEO Series, Thomson Reuters CEO Tom Glocer was interviewed in February before NYU Stern students and alumni by Pulitzer-Prize-winning reporter Stephen Adler, senior vice president and editorial director of the Professional division of Thomson Reuters.

Edward Altman, Max L. Heine Professor of Finance, presented new research forecasting a 4.27-6.7 percent default rate in 2010 at the first annual private equity conference hosted by NYU Stern Salomon Center and Alvarez & Marsal.

As part of NYU Stern’s Graduate Marketing Association (GMA) Fireside Chat series, Dannon Company’s CEO Gustavo Valle spoke to a select group of 30 MBA students at NYU’s Torch Club on December 7.

“Engaging in a discussion on lessons learned from one of the most severe financial crises in history was a key goal of this year’s Association of Investment Management & Research (AIMR) conference,” said MBA student and event coordinator Kelly Henry.

“With roughly 200 attendees, some 20 speakers and representatives from 12 companies, the 14th Annual Graduate Finance Association (GFA) Conference offered students a unique opportunity to listen to and speak with leading professionals from nearly all corners of finance, including corporate finance, hedge funds, sales and trading, private wealth management and investment banking” said GFA member Mike Tarulli.

“Great strides have been made in the field of social entrepreneurship, but the ability to measure and communicate the impact of a venture's efforts still remains a significant challenge for most organizations,” says NYU Stern Professor Jill Kickul.

NYU Stern Salomon Center, in partnership with Nasdaq OMX, recently hosted an all-day conference discussing the future of derivatives. New research in the area was presented by Stern faculty and faculty from other schools including Columbia Business School and UCLA.

Over 200 world-wide practitioners from the public, nonprofit and for-profit fields, along with leading scholars, convened for the Satter Conference on November 6. Hosted by Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, the event followed a two-day academic conference featuring some of the latest research in the areas of social enterprise and measuring an organization’s social impact.

Some 50 academics, practitioners and policy makers gathered for a roundtable discussion, hosted by Stern’s Vincent C. Ross Institute of Accounting, to debate whether or not the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) should be insulated from political pressure.

Some 330 students, alumni, marketing professionals and corporate representatives gathered at NYU Stern to examine the evolution of the marketing function, which is racing to adapt to the increasing presence of social media, the move to brand globalization and the impact of the recent economic climate.

On October 29, the NYU Stern Sales & Trading Club hosted its third annual summit, bringing together students, alumni and industry leaders in the sales and trading industry to candidly discuss career paths and current opportunities in the field.

“Reflect, Rethink, Reshape: Exploring the New Normal,” themed the 24th Annual NYU Stern Association of Hispanic and Black Business Students (AHBBS) Conference, which brought together more than 200 students, alumni, faculty, corporate representatives and prospective students on October 16.

Hundreds of NYU Stern and Law students and alumni attended Stern’s CEO Series on October 12 with NYU Law alumnus Barry Salzberg (LLM ’81), Chief Executive Officer of Deloitte LLP, which provides audit, consulting, financial advisory, risk management, and tax services to more than 80 percent of the world's largest companies.

On September 23, two teams of researchers reported on the first phase of their study on effective approaches to the training of prospective innovative entrepreneurs at NYU Stern. Innovative entrepreneurs develop new products or services using new methods to produce or deliver existing goods and services at a lower cost, whereas replicative entrepreneurs produce or sell goods or services that are already available in the marketplace.

On Monday, September 21, the NYU Stern Salomon Center for the Study of Financial Institutions held a day-long conference on insurance industry regulation to discuss the industry’s current regulatory environment and, with learnings from the financial crisis, options for regulatory improvement including enacting a federal optional charter.

More than 100 alumni gathered at NYU Stern on September 17 to celebrate the publication of Dr. Henry Kaufman’s (BA ’48 (Heights), PhD ‘58) newest book, “The Road to Financial Reformation: Warnings, Consequences and Reforms,” and to hear his prescient insights into the mistakes that led to the financial crisis and his recommendations to prevent its repetition.

More than 450 students and alumni gathered, standing-room-only, in Schimmel auditorium on September 15 to hear about this year’s Entrepreneurs Challenge, comprising the 11th Annual New Venture Competition and the 6th Annual Social Venture Competition, and sponsored by NYU Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation.

The Journal of Accounting Auditing and Finance (JAAF), sponsored by NYU Stern’s Vincent C. Ross Institute of Accounting Research, held its 2009 JAAF-Bocconi research symposium this fall, convening selected scholars from around the world in Italy to discuss performance evaluation and executive compensation.

Bringing together scholars and practitioners from around the US and countries as far reaching as Germany, Turkey and New Zealand, the Sixth Annual Marketing Dynamics Conference served as a forum to share and analyze some of the latest research in the field.
