As President-elect Obama transitions into the White House, experts from the Council on Foreign Relations, The Economist and NYU Stern debated the current global financial crisis with a focus on ways to repair a broken economy. Entitled "Transition 2008: Advising America's Next President," this is the first of three events that address global issues as they relate to the US presidency.

On October 24, at NYU Stern for a GE Live event entitled, "Winning in Today's Environment," Immelt spoke to nearly 300 NYU Stern MBA students as well as hundreds more at six other business schools across the globe — London Business School, IESE in Spain, UVA-Darden, Thunderbird, UN,C and Emory — where the event was broadcast live.

As the Dow hits records lows, consumer confidence continues to wane and the Fed crafts plans to stave off a Depression-like era, Dean Thomas Cooley moderated a discussion with industry, media and academic thought-leaders to analyze, and offer solutions for, the current financial crisis.

In publishing the first empirical evidence measuring the value of academic research on business school performance, NYU Stern Marketing Professor Peter Golder, with Debanjan Mitra of the University of Florida, use data to challenge the widely publicized 2005 Harvard Business Review opinion-based attack by Bennis and O'Toole on business schools for becoming too focused on research at students' expense. Golder and Mitra's research appears in the September 2008 issue of The Journal of Marketing.

The New York University Leonard N. Stern School of Business and the Swiss Finance Institute announce a new executive learning program to tackle future challenges presented by the global financial system. The specialized executive MBA in Banking and Financial Institutions Management assembles a faculty offering an unrivaled concentration of global expertise in banking and finance.

Amsterdam Institute of Finance (AIF) and New York University Stern School of Business (NYU Stern) are partnering to launch the Executive Master of Science in Risk Management, an innovative, global executive degree program in risk management. This alliance connects two of the world's financial centers and provides a firm response to the current financial turmoil.

The Stern Campus Greening Initiative (SCGI) won "green" at the national Net Impact Green Challenge, an event that recognizes and rewards members of the Net Impact group who are working on tangible projects that make a positive environmental impact on their company, campus or community.

More than $150,000 in seed money and in-kind support was awarded to the winners of the 9th Annual NYU Stern Business Plan Competition. The three winning teams, each lead by NYU students and alumni, were chosen by a panel of seasoned business owners and private investors after successfully pitching their new venture ideas. Taking top honors were business concepts that mirror marketplace trends such as leveraging social networking sites to create unique product offerings and using innovative business models to combat intractable global social issues, including poverty and poor access to quality healthcare.

New York University Stern School of Business and the Tribeca Film Festival have joined forces to offer “Convergence and Cinema at the Tribeca Film Festival,” a new course for undergraduate business students. Offered through Stern’s Entertainment, Media and Technology (EMT) Program, the course will provide students with access to leaders in the entertainment industry and a deeper understanding of the impact multimedia and new distribution channels will have on filmmaking.

With housing prices plummeting, oil approaching $120 a barrel and the global financial system in shambles, a recent NYU Stern event posed the question, "How do we restore confidence in credit markets and the economy?"

With oil over $100 a barrel, the CEO Series on April 8 with John Hofmeister, President of Shell Oil Company, proved to be especially timely and of interest to Stern students and alumni who packed Schimmel Auditorium to hear Mr. Hofmeister speak.

The day after Hilary Clinton's primary wins in Texas and Ohio, further delaying the selection of the Democratic candidate, NYU Stern, The Economist and CFR.org hosted the final debate of the year of the Global Issues in Campaign 2008 series, "Brand America: Can the New President Rescue America's Image."

Exploring the latest strategies and techniques to measure an organization's social impact, more than 150 entrepreneurs, investors, philanthropists and academics gathered for the Fifth Annual NYU Stern Satter Conference of Social Entrepreneurs this November.

With millions of legal and illegal immigrants in the country, immigration is a hot button topic in the current US Presidential campaign. On "Super Tuesday," NYU Stern, The Economist and the Council on Foreign Relations.org held a panel discussion about immigration, entitled, "The Immigration Balancing Act: Border Security, Cheap Labor and US Jobs," the third in a series of events focusing on global issues as they relate to the election.

Coinciding with the introduction of a new leadership team at its Berkley Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, New York University Stern School of Business recently received gifts from multiple donors totaling $6.5 million. This increased funding comes at a time when interest in business ownership among Stern students and alumni is at an all time high.

On November 12, 2007 Thomas F. Cooley, Dean of the NYU Stern School of Business; Amity Schlaes, Senior Fellow for Economic History at the Council on Foreign Relations; and Matthew Bishop, Editor and New York Bureau Chief at the Economist debated global trade issues as they relate to the 2008 American Presidential election.

NYU Stern's Office of Alumni Affairs and Annual Giving, the NYU Stern Alumni Council Finance Committee and the Stern Salomon Center for Research in Financial Institutions and Markets recently co-hosted a panel discussion on the subprime credit crisis.

Stern MBA and undergraduate students, as well as alumni, gained valuable insights into Doug Conant, President and CEO of Campbell Soup Company's, management approach and long-term business strategy at Stern's CEO Series on October 15.

On October 1, 2007 John Mack, Chairman and CEO of Morgan Stanley, addressed 450 Stern MBA and undergraduate students in Schimmel Auditorium as part of Stern’s “Meet the Chief Executive Series.”

On March 27, 2007, Sharon Allen, chairman of the board at Deloitte & Touche USA, discussed employee retention, her management style, and Sarbanes-Oxley’s affect on the auditing profession and boards of directors at Stern’s CEO Series.

On February 12, 2007, Stern welcomed Matt Blank, Chairman and CEO of Showtime Networks, for its popular CEO Series. Interviewed by BusinessWeek media and entertainment reporter Tom Lowry, Mr. Blank discussed the rapidly changing media industry, how Showtime is staying relevant and successful in the new media age, and what it takes to have a career in “show biz.”

On September 25, students packed Schimmel Auditorium to hear Chuck Prince, Chairman and CEO of Citigroup, at Stern’s popular CEO Series. Mr. Prince, interviewed by Financial Times Senior Banking Editor David Wighton, shared how Citigroup has shifted from an acquisition to an organic growth strategy.

During Stern’s CEO Series on February 8, 2006, Susan Whiting, President and CEO of Nielsen Media Research, sat down with USA Today media reporter David Lieberman to discuss the evolution of measuring television programming as new technologies have changed how consumers watch TV.

On November 15, Stern students and alumni packed Cantor Boardroom to get the inside scoop on all the headline news being generated about SIRIUS Satellite Radio from the company’s CEO, Mel Karmazin.
