Incomplete Grades

If coursework will not be completed before the last class for the semester, students may request a grade of Incomplete. Students should discuss this option with the professor before the last day of class. An Incomplete grade is given at the discretion of the professor. Both the student and the instructor must complete an Incomplete Grade Form. This multi-page form is obtained from the Office of Records and Registration and is not available on-line. A copy of the form must be returned to The Office of Records & Registration.

Incomplete Pass (IP) and Incomplete Fail (IF)

There are two options for an Incomplete grade:

  1. An Incomplete Pass (IP). An Incomplete Pass may be given if the student was passing at the time of the incomplete. The "IP" will lapse to an "N" or no credit, if not completed by the deadline.
  2. An Incomplete Fail (IF). An Incomplete Fail is given if the student was failing at the time of the incomplete was given. An "IF" will lapse to an "F" or fail if not made up by the deadline. A failed course must be re-taken if needed for degree requirements (core courses and/or credit requirements). A grade of "F" will figure into the GPA.

Deadlines for Completion

An incomplete grade received for a course taken in the Fall, must be completed and grade submitted by the following June 1. An incomplete grade received for a course taken in Winter Intensives, Spring, or Summer must be completed by the following January 1. Graduating students have revised deadline; please see Graduation Requirements for those deadlines. There are no extensions for the incomplete deadlines.

"Sitting in" on a course during the following semester to make up the incomplete is not permitted.

The procedure for requesting an Incomplete Grade is as follows:

  1. Student requests grade of Incomplete from professor before the last day of class.
  2. If the professor agrees, the student and the instructor must complete an Incomplete Grade Form. This multi-page form is obtained from the Office of Records and Registration and a copy of the form must be returned to the Office of Records & Registration.
  3. Student must complete the grade by the required deadline, June 1 for Fall courses and January 1 for Spring or Summer courses. Extensions are not granted.
