A sampling of media highlights for the week of November 10, 2020

Excerpt from Poets & Quants -- “‘Location and the Fertitta Veterans Program made Stern my target,’ Johnny shared with me,  ‘but Stern’s top-tier reputation, international opportunities, focus on EQ+IQ and positive interactions with Sternies throughout the admissions process only reinforced my desire to be part of this community.’”
“For Dan, the Military Veterans Club (MVC) has provided community within Stern from the very beginning. ‘The day before my Stern interview, an MBA student from the club reached out to offer support,’ he told me. Now, it is his turn. As co-presidents, Dan and Johnny have focused on strengthening networking opportunities through club activities. At the same time, they have connected MVC to the executive MBA and part-time programs at Stern to widen the actual network and increased the pipeline by partnering directly with admissions to find the best candidates.”

Excerpt from Clear Admit-- “‘My first exposure to life at Stern was through the school’s Fertitta Veterans Program. The program is designed for US military veterans and active duty students to support their transition to business school. Through the program, all of the veterans take two classes together (accounting and statistics) during the summer before the first year of the MBA program. During the program, we also had the opportunity to visit the offices of companies such as JP Morgan, Boston Consulting Group, and Google. Students who are accepted into the program are eligible to receive the Fertitta Veterans Scholarship. I’m incredibly grateful to alumnus Lorenzo (MBA ’93) and his brother Frank J. Fertitta III for their generous gift which established the program, and their recognition of the value veterans bring to the workforce.’”

The NYU Pollack Center for Law & Business will co-host, "Insider Trading: Honoring the Past｜A Program Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Chiarella v. United States," on November 5, 2020.

We are continuing to support students in their job searches with several more continuing to accept jobs past the three-month mark at pace with the just-in-time hiring picking up in the market now, pushing us past 90% at this moment in time.

Excerpt from BusinessBecause -- “In his research report, ‘Regulating Social Media: The Fight Over Section 230—and Beyond’, Paul says that Section 230 should be preserved and improved upon, pushing platforms to accept greater responsibility.
He also floats the idea of creating a Digital Regulatory Agency. 
‘There’s a crisis of trust in the major platforms’ ability and willingness to superintend their sites. Creation of a new independent digital oversight authority should be part of the response,’ he explains in the report.”

A sampling of media highlights for the week of October 27, 2020

Excerpt from Clear Admit -- "Of the 317 members of the NYU Stern Class of 2022, 43 percent are women, which represents a six percent increase from last year and a tie with the highest representation ever. Thirty-two percent have international citizenship; this includes foreign nationals, dual citizens and U.S. permanent residents. Altogether, the class represents 30 different countries. Thirty-two percent of the new class identify as minorities and 12 percent as underrepresented minorities. The average age of the group is 28, with ages spanning 22 to 40."

Excerpt from BusinessBecause -- "The NYU Stern class of 2022 has broken GPA and GMAT records this year. With applications up by 4%, the school is growing as an attractive option for intelligently sharp, professionally diverse MBA candidates.
The program, with its diverse mix of undergrad majors, means that it's an option for students from both traditional and 'non-traditional' backgrounds. It's the program for you whether you're a consultant with a few years experience, working in finance, or embedded in the arts or nonprofit sectors. Nearly a third of the class are from minority backgrounds and nearly a third are international."

On Tuesday, October 27, NYU Stern's Center for Global Economy and Business hosted a fireside chat with International Monetary Fund Research Director Dr. Gita Gopinath.

Excerpt from Poets & Quants -- “The entrepreneurial network and infrastructure at NYU Stern has also been a huge boost for the company. We were accepted into the flagship accelerator at NYU Stern, The $300K Entrepreneurs Challenge, which we deferred to participate in to 2021 because of COVID. We were also selected in the Stern Venture Fellowship (SVF) for the summer of 2020. The SVF gives us access to $15,000 in grants to attempt new initiatives and a tremendous amount of exposure. More importantly, the program pairs us with a dream team of coaches who are industry leaders and provides us a structure over 12 weeks that keeps us focused on achieving our milestones while giving us the flexibility to be creative.”

Excerpt from Poets & Quants -- "Raghu Sundaram, dean of the Stern School of Business at New York University, added that Trump’s executive order was a 'zero-sum presupposition' that would damage the U.S. economy in ways that will hurt all Americans. 'These restraints,' Sundaram said, 'will restrict innovation, economic recovery, and the potential for economic growth, hurting all Americans.'”

Excerpt from Talking Biz News -- “New York Times reporter Jeanna Smialek, who covers the Federal Reserve Board and the economy, has signed a deal to write a book about the Fed.
The book will be published in 2022 and is tentatively titled ‘Invisible Empires.’ The publisher is Knopf.

Smialek is studying for her master’s in business administration at New York University’s Stern School.”

A sampling of media highlights for the week of October 20, 2020

On Tuesday, October 20, NYU Stern hosted "In Conversation with Lord Mervyn King featuring Michael Sandel," the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Government at Harvard University, on his new book: The Tyranny of Merit:  What's Become of the Common Good? The discussion touched on a number of topics and timely issues, including the dignity of work, meritocracy and economic inequality, and academic life in a global media market

Excerpt from Poets & Quants -- “Stern has a number of ways to include partners and integrate them into the Stern community. There is a Stern Partners Club, which is housed under our Student Government. The staple Stern Social events on Thursday evenings (now temporarily on hiatus) always invite partners to join, and many of the student organizations host events that are open to partners. For example, the Association of Hispanic and Black Business Students hosts an annual ‘90s party that tops the list of major social events each year for students and their partners.”

On Thursday, October 15, NYU Stern's Center for Global Economy and Business hosted a fireside chat with Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis President Neel Kashkari.

Excerpt from Poets & Quants -- "DI issues and racial justice in particular are not local but they are global issues, and as global business schools, even as we train students for leadership in a more globalized world, decisions have to be an integral part of the education part of the reasons that Francesca articulated so well. One small example is our most recent effort at Stern. Every single entering student in our undergraduate program, MBA program, and executive programs all take the Intercultural Development Inventory assessment to gauge cultural competence, and every student has assigned a coach to interpret their assessment, and to provide a plan for growth. I think this is almost an essential part of creating better leaders for tomorrow."

Excerpt from Fast Casual -- “One fast casual chain has already found success, however, with its own carbon-labeling initiative. Just Salad, based in New York City, worked with students this summer from the New York University Stern School of Business to post the carbon footprints of its menu items.”
