Considering market-based approaches to tackle the world’s most intractable social problems is exactly the type of study NYU Stern’s Citi Leadership and Ethics Program was created to explore. Marking its 7th year, the Program appointed Mary Ellen Iskenderian, President and CEO of Women’s World Banking (WWB), the world’s largest network of microfinance institutions and banks, as this year’s Distinguished Citi Fellow in Leadership and Ethics.

As of the end of 2008, $9.6 trillion was invested with investment professionals in the US. How can investors know their money is well managed? Three NYU Stern professors recommend picking money managers who shift their investment strategies over the course of the business cycle.

“With roughly 200 attendees, some 20 speakers and representatives from 12 companies, the 14th Annual Graduate Finance Association (GFA) Conference offered students a unique opportunity to listen to and speak with leading professionals from nearly all corners of finance, including corporate finance, hedge funds, sales and trading, private wealth management and investment banking” said GFA member Mike Tarulli.

“Great strides have been made in the field of social entrepreneurship, but the ability to measure and communicate the impact of a venture's efforts still remains a significant challenge for most organizations,” says NYU Stern Professor Jill Kickul.

NYU Stern Salomon Center, in partnership with Nasdaq OMX, recently hosted an all-day conference discussing the future of derivatives. New research in the area was presented by Stern faculty and faculty from other schools including Columbia Business School and UCLA.

Over 200 world-wide practitioners from the public, nonprofit and for-profit fields, along with leading scholars, convened for the Satter Conference on November 6. Hosted by Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, the event followed a two-day academic conference featuring some of the latest research in the areas of social enterprise and measuring an organization’s social impact.

Some 50 academics, practitioners and policy makers gathered for a roundtable discussion, hosted by Stern’s Vincent C. Ross Institute of Accounting, to debate whether or not the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) should be insulated from political pressure.

The conference was held on November 1 and featured many speakers and panels throughout the day.

Some 330 students, alumni, marketing professionals and corporate representatives gathered at NYU Stern to examine the evolution of the marketing function, which is racing to adapt to the increasing presence of social media, the move to brand globalization and the impact of the recent economic climate.

On October 29, the NYU Stern Sales & Trading Club hosted its third annual summit, bringing together students, alumni and industry leaders in the sales and trading industry to candidly discuss career paths and current opportunities in the field.

New York University Stern School of Business Luxury and Retail club, in partnership with LuxuryLab, will co-host the Innovation Forum 2009, a half-day event that includes 15, nine- and 18-minute high velocity presentations from some of the biggest names in luxury goods, media and academia.

In their paper, “The Price of Sin: The Effects of Social Norms on Markets,” NYU Stern Assistant Professor of Finance Marcin Kacperczyk and his co-author, Harrison Hong from Princeton University, examine the performance of stocks from 1926-2006.

On October 20, NYU Stern alumnus John Poindexter (MBA ’71 & PhD ’76), along with 86 veterans of the troop he commanded, was honored with the Presidential Unit Citation by President Obama in recognition for their actions four decades ago in the Republic of Vietnam.

“Reflect, Rethink, Reshape: Exploring the New Normal,” themed the 24th Annual NYU Stern Association of Hispanic and Black Business Students (AHBBS) Conference, which brought together more than 200 students, alumni, faculty, corporate representatives and prospective students on October 16.

NYU Stern Finance Professor Stephen Brown, with co-authors William Goetzmann from the Yale School of Management, Bing Liang from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Christopher Schwarz from the University of California at Irvine, examined 444 hedge fund due diligence reports supplied by a major hedge fund due diligence firm hired on behalf of investors.

Hundreds of NYU Stern and Law students and alumni attended Stern’s CEO Series on October 12 with NYU Law alumnus Barry Salzberg (LLM ’81), Chief Executive Officer of Deloitte LLP, which provides audit, consulting, financial advisory, risk management, and tax services to more than 80 percent of the world's largest companies.

On September 30, 2009, NYU Stern Professor Lawrence White testified before the US House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform during a hearing to examine the role of credit rating agencies in the recent financial crisis, the dangers they pose to investors and whether the agencies need to be regulated.

On September 25 & 26, NYU Stern’s Vincent C. Ross Institute of Accounting Research hosted the 2009 Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Finance & KPMG Foundation Conference on “Topical Issues in Accounting.”

On September 23, two teams of researchers reported on the first phase of their study on effective approaches to the training of prospective innovative entrepreneurs at NYU Stern. Innovative entrepreneurs develop new products or services using new methods to produce or deliver existing goods and services at a lower cost, whereas replicative entrepreneurs produce or sell goods or services that are already available in the marketplace.

Apple, BMW, Audi, Sony, Porsche, Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren and Tag Heuer are “Geniuses” when it comes to using digital applications to strengthen their brands, according to the new Digital IQ Ranking.

On Monday, September 21, the NYU Stern Salomon Center for the Study of Financial Institutions held a day-long conference on insurance industry regulation to discuss the industry’s current regulatory environment and, with learnings from the financial crisis, options for regulatory improvement including enacting a federal optional charter.

More than 100 alumni gathered at NYU Stern on September 17 to celebrate the publication of Dr. Henry Kaufman’s (BA ’48 (Heights), PhD ‘58) newest book, “The Road to Financial Reformation: Warnings, Consequences and Reforms,” and to hear his prescient insights into the mistakes that led to the financial crisis and his recommendations to prevent its repetition.

On September 16, 2009, Professor Lawrence White testified before the United States House of Representatives Committee on Financial Services during a hearing on “Proposals to Enhance the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA).” In the hearing, Professor White argued that the CRA is not a good public policy tool, described the act’s shortcomings and outlined a more effective way to achieve the goals of CRA advocates.

More than 450 students and alumni gathered, standing-room-only, in Schimmel auditorium on September 15 to hear about this year’s Entrepreneurs Challenge, comprising the 11th Annual New Venture Competition and the 6th Annual Social Venture Competition, and sponsored by NYU Stern’s Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation.
