A World-Class Welcome

The NYU Stern Undergraduate College awaits the arrival of the Class of 2018.

Orientation at the NYU Stern Undergraduate College is a weeklong experience filled with interactive workshops, social activities, informational sessions, and special events. The week of events provides students an opportunity to build community, learn how to navigate NYU, and generate excitement for the start of their first year.

For Kiki Lizárraga (BS ’16), a native of Los Angeles, Calif., orientation was essential in easing her adjustment to life in New York City and at Stern.

“I truly found the presence of a Stern community, held together by a spirit of camaraderie, during orientation,” says Lizárraga, who is studying marketing and minoring in public policy and management at Stern. “Just realizing I had a support system like that to fall back on made me feel comfortable in my own skin, which enabled me to mentally prepare for the year and made me feel secure in my choice of attending Stern.”

Lizárraga served as an orientation leader as a sophomore, and is a member of the Undergraduate College’s Street Team. She says that her orientation leaders set a great example for her, and she felt compelled to get involved and give back to future generations of students as a result. Lizárraga credits her orientation leaders for helping her to expand her horizons and immerse herself in the student experience at Stern; she is studying at NYU Madrid in Spain for the fall 2014 semester.

Jon Wang (BS ’17), who is also a Street Team member, is serving as an orientation leader for the class of 2018 and looks forward to spending time with Stern’s newest students.

“I'm really excited about welcoming a whole new class of students to Stern! As the first people they're going to see at school, we get to show them the ropes of first-year life,” says Wang, who is studying finance and computer science.

Wang says that orientation was important to him personally because it was where he first discovered the wealth of knowledge upperclassmen at Stern had to share with younger students. He and Lizárraga both encourage students to ask questions of their peers to aid in their transition to college.

“Don't be afraid to get involved and talk to upperclassmen,” he says. “It's been a year at school, and I'm far from wise. I still get a lot of advice from seniors and recent alumni.”

“This is a great time to not only meet new people, but to really get to know your fellow cohort members,” says Lizárraga. “Friends from your cohort are an excellent resource for help in classes, study sessions, or just buddies during your exploration of the city.”
