Independent Study in Renewable Energy at Con Edison
Publish Stern Case Study and Get Academic Credit for Group Independent Study in Renewable Energy at Con Edison with Stern’s Center for Sustainable Business
Team members (up to four) will write a case study for one of two possible topics: (a) Brooklyn-Queens Demand Management project, in which Con Edison is helping customers define and fund energy-saving investments, recovering the costs over time; or (b) a community solar demonstration project for low-income households, which would deliver savings to both Con Edison and its customers. Both projects require Con Edison to develop new business models and operating practices. We will select one of these projects with the student team to research and document.
Working with Chet Van Wert (Senior Research Scholar for the Center for Sustainable Business and adjunct instructor in the Division of Programs in Business, NYU School of Professional Studies), students will meet with Con Edison staff, review materials provided by Con Edison, and research similar projects completed by other organizations, as well as published information on the topic. The team will write a case study that illuminates the business, social and sustainability issues, asking the reader to make key business decisions and support them based on the information provided by the case study.
At the end of the project, the student team will have produced a publishable case study for use by business school students. Student team members will be credited in the pubished work for their contributions. Students will acquire real-world experience with some of the challenges in building a new, sustainable, resilient, and economical energy infrastructure. They will also gain insight into the intersection of public policy and market economics in this area, and the use of demonstration projects to test new business models.
