—
On April 23, 2026, NYU Stern brought together more than 400 alumni, donors, and friends to celebrate the power of philanthropy at the 46th Annual Haskins Giving Society Awards Dinner. Hosted at the iconic Cipriani 25 Broadway, the event honored two exemplary leaders who embody the School’s values of excellence and service: Martin J. Gruber, recipient of the Charles Waldo Haskins Award, and Chavon Sutton (MBA ’12), recipient of the NYU Stern Torchbearer Award.
The program began with opening remarks from Bharat N. Anand, Dean of the Stern School of Business. Dean Anand underscored the vital role the Haskins Giving Society plays in fueling the School’s momentum and how the collective generosity of those in the room ensures that Stern remains a pioneer in business education. Dean Anand was joined by University President Linda G. Mills, who noted the exceptional philanthropic efforts of the Stern community.

The evening paid special tribute to Martin (Marty) J. Gruber, this year’s recipient of the Charles Waldo Haskins Award. Recognized for his long-standing dedication and transformative support of the University, Marty served as a Professor of Finance for 45 years, shaping not only generations of students and scholars in the field but also the Stern School of Business itself.
One of the most distinguished figures in investment research, Marty is a fellow and former president of the American Finance Association, as well as a fellow of the Financial Management Association and the Institute for Quantitative Research in Finance. He has also served as chair of the Finance Department at NYU Stern and currently serves as a Scholar in Residence.
Marty is a co-author of Modern Portfolio Theory and Investment Analysis, now in its ninth edition and widely regarded as one of the definitive graduate-level finance textbooks. His research has earned numerous honors, including the Graham and Dodd Award and the James R. Vertin Award, which recognizes scholarship of enduring value to investment professionals. Over many decades, Marty has also been a generous and deeply committed supporter of the School, contributing scholarships, fellowships, named spaces, and conferences and convenings that foster and elevate thought leadership in finance.

The School was also proud to honor Chavon Sutton, who earned her MBA in Finance from Stern in 2012, with this year’s NYU Stern Torchbearer Award. As a leader in sustainable investing and a dedicated advocate for equity in finance, Chavon represents the "rising star" spirit the Torchbearer Award celebrates. A frequent mentor to Stern students and a vocal champion for diversity within the industry, Chavon’s tireless volunteerism has made her a guiding force within Stern’s alumni network.
Chavon serves on the Stern Alumni Council as vice chair of Industry Affinity Programs and founded the Stern Corporate Ambassadors program, which has built and scaled structured alumni engagement across industries. She also serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Professional Responsibility & Leadership. In recognition of her leadership and commitment to advancing women in business, she was honored with the 2025 Stern Women in Business (SWIB) Alumnae Award.
Chavon is also a managing director in the Global Investment Research Group at Cambridge Associates. Prior to Cambridge, she served in various roles across New York City’s Bureau of Asset Management, J.P. Morgan, Bank of America, and RBC Capital Markets. Chavon is an experienced business reporter and has written for CNN Business, Forbes, and Reuters. Outside of work, she is a classically trained singer and entrepreneur.
The evening concluded with a celebratory toast to the continued success of the School and its community.
