The Breakthrough Scholars Leadership Program Helps Anurag Nambiar Turn Access Into Impact
—
Anurag Nambiar (BS ’29) arrived at NYU Stern with both excitement and a sense of disbelief. A freshman from Potomac, Maryland, he is a Breakthrough Scholar whose full scholarship has made it possible for him to fully immerse himself in the academic and social life of the University. But for Anurag, the Breakthrough Scholars Leadership Program is far more than financial support—it is a comprehensive program designed to ease the transition to college, offering seminars, professional development resources, and a strong sense of community. Through this support system, he has been able to confidently navigate his first year while exploring his academic interests and envisioning how he might make a broader impact through business.
Originally from New Jersey, Anurag spent his high school years in Maryland, where he developed a love for public speaking through Model UN and found joy in the outdoors, even backpacking in New Mexico for two weeks. It wasn’t until his junior year, however, that his academic interests began to crystallize. An economics class, paired with an investment competition where he conducted macroeconomic research and managed a portfolio, sparked a fascination with markets and policy. That experience ultimately led him to pursue business at Stern.
The Breakthrough Scholars Leadership Program has played a central role in shaping his first year. Through regular seminars, Anurag has been introduced to a range of career paths—from marketing to investment banking—often through conversations with alumni. These sessions, along with workshops on professional skills like networking and communication, have helped him navigate the transition to college with confidence. “It really feels like a community,” he says, noting the value of being surrounded by peers who are equally motivated and supported.
Beyond the classroom, the program has encouraged both personal growth and a commitment to giving back. A retreat in the Catskills early in the semester helped build lasting connections, while volunteer opportunities reinforced the importance of service. “You’re getting so much from the scholarship,” Anurag reflects, “and it instills the idea that you should give back as well.”
Academically, Anurag is exploring a path in finance, econometrics, and quantitative economics, while remaining open to different career possibilities. He is especially interested in macroeconomics and public policy—following current events, analyzing how governments shape economic outcomes, and learning how central banks operate across different countries. He is drawn to understanding markets as interconnected systems, and hopes to pursue a career that allows him to study and interpret the broader economic landscape.
Courses like Microeconomics and Commerce and Culture have challenged him to think critically about business and its role in society. Outside of class, he has embraced life in New York City—finding free things to do like exploring museums, trying new foods, and building friendships with students from around the world. With the support of his scholarship, Anurag is not only building a future for himself, but also preparing to contribute meaningfully to the world.
